Private Label Fishing Equipment Guide
What private label really involves for a carp tackle range: the difference between private label, OEM and ODM, the branding assets you have to supply, packaging and labelling requirements, and the order in which a launch should happen.
Three Routes to an Own-Brand Range
| Route | What changes | Who owns the design | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private label | Branding, colours and packaging only; the product stays as it is | The manufacturer or the original platform owner | Fastest launch and lowest minimums; the natural first step for a new brand |
| OEM | Product produced to your specification, under your brand | Agreed per project | Requires a written specification and sample approval; higher minimums |
| ODM with adaptation | Design work is added to an existing platform – dimensions, materials or features change | Agreed per project; development is usually commissioned by the buyer | Slower and more expensive, but the result is genuinely yours |
Many successful ranges start with private label on one or two hero products, then move to adaptation once the sales pattern is known. Our own commercial terms for this route are on the private label fishing gear page.
Branding Assets You Must Supply
- Logo in vector format (SVG, AI or EPS). A JPEG lifted from a website cannot be used for print or embroidery without redrawing it.
- Brand colours, ideally as Pantone references, plus the nearest RGB or HEX values for digital use.
- Product naming – what appears on the label, the carton and your listing. The same name should be used in all three.
- Packaging direction: artwork files, or a brief if the artwork is being produced for you.
- Barcodes: EAN or UPC numbers issued to your company, not numbers re-used from another product.
- Market requirements: destination country, retail channel, and the languages required on the label.
- Regulatory details for your market: the importer name and address that must appear on the product or packaging under EU rules, plus any market-specific statements that apply to your product.
Missing barcodes and importer details are the two most common reasons a private label shipment cannot be sold into retail on arrival, so they belong at the start of the project rather than in the final week.
Where Branding Can Go, by Category
| Category | Usual branding positions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chairs and bedchairs | Frame badge or printed panel, seat label, carry bag | Moulded or metal badges usually carry a tooling cost and a minimum; woven labels do not |
| Bivvies and shelters | Carry bag, front panel print, internal label, zip pulls | Panel printing may carry a screen or transfer minimum per colour |
| Sleeping bags and sleep systems | Zip pull, side label, carry bag, shell print | Printing on shell fabric is the most demanding option; labels are the pragmatic choice |
| Fish care | Printed mat face, sewn label, moulded components | Printed mats usually require a minimum per design because of the print setup |
| Packaging | Carton print, inserts, instruction sheet, barcode label | Retail-ready packaging changes both cost and packing efficiency |
Packaging Options and Their Consequences
Poly bag
Lowest cost and lowest minimum. Suitable for a distributor who repacks, or for online sellers who add their own outer. Least protection in transit.
Printed carton
Branded outer with product information and barcode. Requires carton artwork and a print minimum, and it changes the carton dimensions used in the shipping calculation.
Retail-ready
Product, packaging and label that can go straight to a shelf: barcode, importer details, language requirements and often a hang tag. Highest cost, and it must be specified before production.
Master carton and pallet
How goods are consolidated: units per carton, carton size, pallet pattern and labelling. This is what determines container fill rate and therefore freight cost per unit.
A Launch Sequence That Works
- Choose the platforms. Two or three products, not a full range. Start from the catalogue and pick what your market actually buys.
- Confirm the route per product: private label, OEM or adaptation, and the minimum order that applies to each.
- Prepare branding assets in the formats above, including barcodes and importer details.
- Approve packaging artwork as a proof before production, not from a production sample.
- Approve a branded sample so you see the actual label, print and finish quality.
- Confirm pricing, minimums and schedule in writing, including the price break table.
- Run production with an inspection plan; use third-party inspection on the first order if you cannot visit.
- Prepare the market file: product documentation, test data and label evidence for your compliance obligations.
What Private Label Does to Minimums
Branding adds minimums of its own: print setup, embroidery programs and woven label runs all have their own floor, and they are often higher than the product minimum itself. The practical consequence is that the cheapest route to a first own-brand order is usually one or two hero products with label-based branding and simple packaging, rather than five products with printed shells. The numbers behind that are set out in the MOQ guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start with a very small first order?
Yes. Trial orders typically start from 10 units per SKU on standard specifications, which is designed for exactly this situation. Packaging and printed branding minimums are the usual constraint rather than the product itself.
Will my branding be exclusive to me?
Your brand assets remain yours, and we do not produce your branded product for another buyer. Exclusivity on the product design itself is a separate arrangement and is agreed per project, normally where the buyer commissions the development.
Do you provide packaging artwork?
We can produce packaging artwork from your brand direction and product information. Buyers with an existing design agency usually keep packaging design in-house and send us finished files.
What do I need for EU retail labelling?
At minimum the importer details required under EU rules, the product information your market expects, and the barcode. Requirements differ by country and channel – tell us where the product will be sold and we will confirm what the label and documentation need to carry.
Launch Your Own Range
